| 14. Ten Basic Commands a Dog Needs to Learn Definition
- "Stop" or "AT"
Whatever youre doing, quit doing it right away. (Takes the place of "no.")
- "Come" (Report) Wherever you are, run to me in a
hurry.
- "Outside" Go out the door into the yard (Figure
1).
- "Get in the House" Go into the house whether
youre in the front or the back yard (Figure 2).
- "Stay" Dont move from that spot; you
dont have to sit or lie down, just remain where you are (Figure 3).
- "Sit" Sit right away, even if youre far
away from me (i.e., across the street) (Figure 4).
- "Wait" Not a stay command; it just means
dont keep going. Hold still for just a second. (Getting out of the car or going
through doors with people.) It keeps accidents from happening (Figures 5 & 6).
- "Go On" Go away from me. (Handy when you are
petting one dog and another comes up and tries to interfere or compete for your
attention.) (Figure 7).
- "Release" Not really a command; it just means,
"at ease, you can relax." I Use this to let a dog get out of a stay position.
- "Heel" Walk next to me, and dont pull on
the leash. Stop every time I stop, and start walking when I start (Figure 8).
