59. Anytime Your Dog is in Your Car

Anytime you take your dog in the car, you must have it secured so that it cannot interfere with your driving. If it is in a carrier or restrained by a seat belt, it will have a better chance of surviving an accident.

I can remember when children used to stand in the seat next to the driver. When the driver stopped, his or her right arm would automatically fly across the seat to keep the child from going through the windshield. Great safety plan, huh? In fact, some of us still knock the wind out of a passenger with our right arm in the event of a sudden stop––old habits die hard! Thankfully, somebody started requiring car seats for children. Now it is time to do the same for dogs.

Water is a must, and in case a dog happens to get loose when it’s being taken out of the car, I also carry a whistle. All my dogs come to a coach’s whistle. You may never need any of these things, but isn’t it better to have them and never need them than to need them and not have them?
