62. Afraid of Dogs

If your dog has this problem, you must look for a good trainer who has group classes. Ask your veterinarian for referrals; also ask friends who have attended classes with their dogs. Classes teach your dog that people and dogs are fun, not a threat.

If your dog is extremely nervous and worried, ask your instructor if you can bring your dog and watch a more advanced class where the dogs are very well trained and controlled under lots of different conditions. Usually the owners of these animals are more confident and will be glad to bring their calm, well-behaved pets around yours so it will learn to relax and perhaps even begin to be friendly or curious about these new acquaintances.
