Every year hundreds of dogs die in swimming pools. I would like to encourage those of you who have pools to take the time to educate your dog and show it the right way to get into and out of the swimming pool.

I’m not suggesting this because I think your dog can’t swim—it probably can. But can it find its way out, once it’s in? Most dogs will swim to the closest part of the cool deck and try to pull themselves out. Your pet can die of exhaustion trying to get out or just holding onto the edge with its paws. The sad thing is that some dogs die when they are only a short distance away from the pool steps and safety; they just don’t know it.
